 DEFINITIONS

 THEORY

  PRACTICE.

Intersectional(ity) + equity = intersequity.

A community rich with support, empowerment

and allyship-- sharing our voices along the way.

Intersectionality is a research lens created and pioneered by Kimberlé Crenshaw. "It's a theoretical framework for understanding how aspects of one's social and political identities might combine to create unique modes of discrimination. It aims to broaden the agenda of the first waves of feminism, which largely focused on the experiences of white, middle-class women."

So, that's where equity comes in. Because it's clear that not all men+ are treated equally, despite all men+ being "created equally"; because we can't pigeon-hole gender, race, etc., in media coverage, instead, we need to focus on the intersections; because it's critical we talk about the issues we are all facing, especially surrounding what makes us, us.

And we need to do it together.

My practice is storytelling. My name is Maura Flynn and I'm a journalism, leadership and women/gender studies Mountaineer at West Virginia University. Launching the Intersequity platform has been my senior multimedia capstone project, and I knew from our first-class that having the opportunity to work on a completely open-ended initiative would allow me to dive deep into my complex relationship with inclusive, compassionate coverage.

I would love to hear what your practice is, or could be. The Intersequity team is just me for now, but I would love that to change. You can find me on (most) social platforms @maurugh. Let's get to know each other.
